A.Gold – Spitalfields

A.Gold is straight out of a Victorian picture book. With large jars of old fashioned sweets, Eccles cakes, fruit cake, Battenberg cake and toffee in beautiful tins it’s heaven for any tourist visiting London, it’s all very ye olde English. They also serve sandwiches to go with a selection of British cheese and various other fillings of the best quality. I love nostalgia shops, particularly Victorian ones, there is something so Gothic about everything Victorian. When Prince Albert died, Queen Victoria chose to only wear black for the rest of her life which sparked a huge industry in the macabre which has trickled down through time so ‘Blood Tonic’ is exactly what I would expect to see here. If you love all things Victorian you should check out the best museum ever, The Dennis Severs’ House just around the corner.
