The appeal lies in the bright garnet-coloured walls and vast menu of delicious Russian dishes. Looking over the menu I realise that like Mexican, Russian food appears to be basically more or less 10 different ingredients in 40 different combinations. The food comes quick and it’s simply cooked yet totally delicious and super cheap. I’m keen to get onto the desserts which include pancakes with winterberries and honey, and the coffee sweetened with black cherries is the perfect end to any meal. My friend here is of the totally clueless type when it comes to food. She’s already asked me what Borsht is (forgivable), Sauerkraut (um well ok..) and Pavlova (come on now). So I’m thinking we should have gone somewhere more European, although she’s just asked what herring is so it probably wouldn’t have made a difference.
