I’d read many a review of the Grocery café all of which condemned the service but enthused about the food. They weren’t wrong about the food, it’s amazing. And I didn’t have a problem with the service – it was fine plus I was served by a guy who looked like the freakish blond choir boy in “The Cook the Thief his Wife and her Lover”. A bit of a hideaway tucked at the back of a chi chi deli-grocery in Shoreditch with exposed brick walls, country kitchen wooden tables and notice boards advertising yoga classes and vegan cookery lessons, it still manages to be more hip than hippie. I was inclined to hate the place, since it’s located only a stone’s throw from one of London’s poorest boroughs but has shelves stocked with 10 different kinds of glucose-free sugar, 15 different types of tofu and 18 varieties of organic granola. But the food is so good and I’d rather not give my money to Tesco.
