The Grocery

I’d read many a review of the Grocery café all of which condemned the service but enthused about the food. They weren’t wrong about the food, it’s amazing. And I didn’t have a problem with the service – it was fine plus I was served by a guy who looked like the freakish blond choir boy in “The Cook the Thief his Wife and her Lover”. A bit of a hideaway tucked at the back of a chi chi deli-grocery in Shoreditch with exposed brick walls, country kitchen wooden tables and notice boards advertising yoga classes and vegan cookery lessons, it still manages to be more hip than hippie (I actually spat out my coffee when I wrote that). I was inclined to hate the place, since it’s located only a stone’s throw from one of London’s poorest boroughs but has shelves stocked with 10 different kinds of glucose-free sugar, 15 different types of tofu and 18 varieties of organic granola. But the food is so good and I’d rather not give my money to Tesco.
