Once upon a time it was a butcher’s shop owned by one Louis Medcalf, now it’s a British bistro. The food is locally sourced whenever possible, my favourite is the fish pie and dark chocolate terrine with orange caramel for dessert. Located in the heart of Exmouth Market it still retains the original Butcher’s shop sign, with bare light bulbs and battered furniture, metal tables, exposed brick walls and bare concrete floors. Medcalf is fashionable yes, but it’s unpretentious and laid back. Whenever people ask me for a recommendation Medcalf is where I suggest nearly every time. Although I never understand, when so much thought has gone into the ‘look’ of a place, right down to the ashtrays, why they go and showcase young and usually rubbish artists by hanging hideous paintings on the walls and for that matter who would want to hang their work on the walls of a restaurant anyway?
