H&G is one of those beautiful ‘nostalgia shops’ that manages to stay in business god knows how as all it sells is sweets and confectionery in beautiful old-fashioned jars and tins lovingly displayed with candy-striped wallpaper and an old-fashioned till. It is for this reason that I love it. It takes me back to my impeccable childhood where my only worry was missing an episode of the Addams Family. I was never really allowed sweets as a child. I made up for it later on when I would win every race at school sports day (the peak and end of my physical career) and was allowed to spend my 10p winnings on penny sweets. Once I was sent to boarding school, I would spend every happy Saturday morning wandering down with my £2.50 pocket money clenched tightly in fist to the sweet shop where I would excitably and meticulously spend it on 250 penny sweets. I would then spend the rest of the day watching the sunset beach omnibus with my very funny fat friend Lucy (she would contribute the Cadbury’s mini eggs and Jelly Bellies) before we embarked on the ice cream cake which was a treat when anyone had a birthday, the great thing being that with 100 girls under one roof, it was always someone’s birthday that week and therefore there was always an ice cream cake.
