Gastro

I consider Clapham a bit of a desert of good places to go. It’s where Australians on their two year visa and people from Edinburgh live, staying only a couple of years before they move on. There appears to be countless classless bars where people can get so drunk that their surroundings are irrelevant. Gastro is a great exception. This rabbit warren of a restaurant with mosaics and little wooden tables tucked in every corner is the closest thing you are going to get to a great French restaurant outside of France. The staff are all French and will only speak French and the sizeable menu including all the great classics includes my favourite, moules et frites and is complete with a live lobster tank. Naturally it has a great wine list and the menu is varied enough to cover most budgets. I went here on a date once. I went through a phase of going on lots of dates, really just so I could do my research on restaurants. It was quite a spectacular date actually, he took me all round the houses of Parliament after hours, although the security guard to the house of commons let it slip that he did this a lot. I kept on saying really stupid things like stating that I was Celtic pronouncing it cell-tic rather than kell-tic and forgetting that Ireland was a completely separate country from Britain and you should have seen the mortified expression on his face when I said that March of the Penguins was boring (sorry Alistar – my friend Alistar loves Penguins), funny though.
