Canteen

On account of its all glass frontage providing an unobscured view of the slick interior, this big glass cube of a restaurant is decidedly minimalist yet classy and in serving up some delicious British cuisine which slightly pushes the boundaries, it’s the British equivalent of high quality soul food. With everything from mac and cheese to a full roast to grilled skate with caper butter, chips and tartar sauce or Welsh rarebit or a hot buttered Arbroath smokie, I come here for breakfast lunch and dinner. They’re going for a wagamama-style seating arrangement with long communal benches which I usually hate. But we were pleasantly seated at one of the little booths off to the side, indeed we were seated side by side looking out of the window, lucky since the passing pedestrians were more interesting than the person I was with – only boast about how much money you have if you’re planning on at least paying for your full share of dinner rather than splitting the bill when I had a salad and you had a steak, don’t stab at your food like Tony Soprano and if I ask a question try asking me one back so the date doesn’t resemble the Spanish inquisition.
