Blue Legume

Beyond the gridlock of baby buggies and over-gentrification, Stoke Newington Church Street has many positive points, one in particular being the Blue Legume. It’s comforting to think that if it weren’t for the bourgeoisie a place like this probably wouldn’t exist. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love this place. Their menu consists of all kinds of breakfasts from British to Mediterranean, and lunch is anything from bespoke sandwiches to elaborate salads. I personally like to come here for a coffee and a slice of lemon cheesecake, (something that wouldn’t cross my mind to order anywhere else). Don’t be put off by its slightly ethnic hippy appearance – at least it has character and isn’t full of health food freaks (just media types who work freelance and have moved to Stoke Newington as they are sick of hauling the baby buggy up the stairs). The veranda at the back makes a nice addition in the summer.

A nice alternative to the sight of blinding white flesh and badly dressed office workers on their lunch break, a reminder of the few sunny days we get here in London, where people seek out any spare bench in the sun. I would recommend a wander in any one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemetery’s. Abney Park in Stoke Newington being my favourite. Less famous than Highgate Cemetery but equally beautiful with it’s crumbling gravestones covered in overgrown ivy and moss, this cemetery has been maintained well um, never it appears. Somewhat something of a jungle, you have to pick your way along the paths being careful not to trip on the sprawling brambles and nettles. Find a spot on a bench next to one of the many (very friendly and polite I might add) tramps and you can enjoy the peace and quiet amongst a field of dead people. Just a note though, it’s also a major gay cruising spot so avoid eye contact.
